The man who shot senior Republican congressman Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice session this week had a list containing the names of three politicians, officials said.

A source said investigators are not sure of the significance of the names and it is not clear whether this was a list of people the attacker was targeting.

Mr Scalise's surgeon said he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", despite being seriously ill when he arrived at hospital after the shooting in Virginia last week. The 51-year-old remains in a critical condition.

Four other people were hurt after James Hodgkinson opened fire at the baseball field as they practised in the morning ahead of a charity game.
