A US college student who tweeted homophobic abuse directed at his professor has gone viral for all the wrong reasons with a classic example of how not to use Twitter.

The student at the University of Alabama at Huntsville tweeted the slur: “My Genetics teacher is a f****t.”

He didn’t actually include his professor’s Twitter handle but when Assistant Professor Eric Mendenhall saw the tweet he decided to respond appropriately.

The academic criticised the student for using the term, finishing his tweet with: “See you Thursday.”

His reply has racked up more than 30,000 shares and likes, with many praising the professor for his response.

In a tweet, he explained: “Each generation shedding some of the hate and bigotry of their parents’ generation is a key part of being human.”

He added the episode would have "no impact" on the student's grades.

Meanwhile, the student switched his account to private within an hour of the professor replying, but while he can hide from the online backlash, there will be no hiding from Assistant Professor Mendenhall in his next lecture.
