People in Maine with electronic benefits transfer cards are getting a sexed-up service when they try to check their balances.

Some have found that dialling the phone number on the back of the cards puts them through to a sex line.

A Maine Department of Health and Human Services spokesman told the Sun Journal that officials had been aware for months that the phone number on some cards was off by one digit.

Lj Langelier, of Lewiston, discovered the error this week when he went to check his EBT balance before going to the grocery shop and got a message welcoming him to "America's hottest talk line".

Mr Langelier said he thought he had misdialled, but kept getting the same message when he called back.

The department now plans to replace the misprinted cards and strengthen its review process to prevent future errors.
