The gunman has been identified in a murder-suicide case at an Alaska hotel that left four people dead, including a two-month-old baby.

Fairbanks police said a preliminary investigation showed that 22-year-old McKay Hutton carried out the killings at a Hampton Inn before shooting himself.

Police said the motive was unknown. The victims were identified as 54-year-old Linda Hutton, 22-year-old Emily McDonald and Teagan Hutton, aged eight weeks. All had gunshot wounds.

Hotel staff called Fairbanks police and fire departments on Friday afternoon. When officers arrived, a man found crying in a second-floor hallway directed them to a nearby room, where they discovered the bodies.

Police say the man who pointed them toward the bodies is a family member who was not present during the shooting and is not being identified because he is not a suspect.

A single firearm was recovered in the room. There is no indication drugs or alcohol was involved.

"I've always loved this picture, I love you baby girl!" Hutton commented on McDonald's profile picture recently. Picture: Facebook

Post-mortems will be performed on the victims on Monday.
