The alleged victim of a violent assault has released a defiant selfie showing her bruised and swollen face, after she was apparently beaten by a man in a nightclub for telling him it is “completely inappropriate to touch a woman without her consent”.

Jeanne Marie Ryan has joined the current #nomakeupselfie trend, which has seen thousands of women post bare-faced pictures on social media sites to raise money for cancer research.

But the image the 29-year-old posted was of her face after, she says, a man groped her on the dancefloor in a club and punched her repeatedly, and is instead being used to raise money for a sexual abuse charity.

Ms Ryan posted the picture on her Facebook page, alongside :"I am sorry cancer research, but my #nomakeupselfie is for a different cause.”

Cancer Research UK received £8 million in donations within a week after the #nomakeup selfie explosion went viral and people donated £3 for posting a picture without make-up online

But Ms Ryan’s picture is now helping to raise money for the Oxford Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre, after she decided "to channel my rage into something constructive".

The Oxford University student said the attack happened after a man assaulted her on the dance floor and then punched her seven times.

“For telling a guy in a club who groped me that it is completely inappropriate to touch a woman without her consent, I was beaten. He told me to ‘smile’ too,” she wrote on her Facebook page.

The post continued: “No, we do not have to wear makeup, no, we do not have to smile and, most importantly, no, we do NOT have to be touched.”

Her Just Giving page has received £12,500 in donations since she posted her picture on Monday.
