Cecil Williams has been given a new guide dog, Godiva, to succeed his previous dog, Orlando, 11, after he and the two-year-old yellow labrador graduated from the Guiding Eyes for the Blind school.

Mr Williams, 61, from Brooklyn, who is on insulin and other medication, lost consciousness and fell off a platform in December and devoted Orlando jumped on to the tracks and tried to revive him. A slow-moving train passed over them, but miraculously, they were unharmed.

But a devastated Mr Williams, who has been blind since 1995, said he faced having to re-home Orlando because his health insurance would not cover the cost of keeping him after he retired, but donations came pouring in, allowing him to look after his faithful friend as a pet.
