Nanny's bail request considered

Published 14/02/2014 | 20:27

A lawyer for an Irish nanny charged with murder over the death of a one-year-old Massachusetts girl cited medical reports on the child's old bone fractures to argue that she should be released on bail while awaiting trial.

Aisling Brady McCarthy is charged over last year's death of Rehma Sabir, of Cambridge, who suffered severe head injuries on her first birthday.

McCarthy's lawyer argued today that two medical experts have concluded the baby suffered bone fractures weeks before her death when she was not in McCarthy's care.

The judge did not immediately rule.

Prosecutors opposed the bail request.

They said if she is released, she will be turned over to immigration officials and would be immediately deported, with no assurance that she could be brought back to face trial.
