The mother of a young man whose death sparked clashes in a Rio de Janeiro slum blames police for her son's death.

Maria de Fatima da Silva told the G1 Internet portal she believes police killed her son.

Douglas Rafael da Silva Pereira's body was found yesterday in the Pavao-Pavaozinho slum a few hundred yards from where Olympic swimming events will be held in 2016.

Ms Silva was quoted as saying police told her Mr Pereira fell to his death.

She said the post-mortem examination shows the body has perforation wounds inconsistent with the police account.

A spokeswoman for Rio de Janeiro's civil police decline to comment, saying an investigation is pending.

Mr Pereira's death triggered violent clashes. News reports say another man was also killed in the violence.
