Britain was braced for another onslaught of heavy rain and violent gales, bringing further flooding to southern counties.

Some 1,000 homes have already been flooded and 13,000 are still without power.

But forecasters said the situation could worsen considerably as another band of rain swept the country, with many rivers in the south still rising due to rainfall earlier in the week.

Some 50,000 homes were left without power on Christmas Day, principally in the south east, while 150 homes in areas including Sussex and Kent were evacuated due to flooding.

An estimated 24,000 homes were still without power first thing yesterday morning but many were reconnected during the course of the day. (©Daily Telegraph, London)
