Turkey to create military 'safe haven' for refugees inside strife-torn Syria

TURKEY is planning to create a military "buffer zone" for refugees inside Syria as protests against the Assad regime spiral, it was claimed yesterday.
Government sources told a leading Turkish newspaper that its soldiers could set up a "safe haven" should the flood of those fleeing the fighting get bigger.
"We would close the border but we cannot turn our back," a Turkish official told newspaper 'Hurriyet'.
The suggestion came as Turkey faced pressure to take tougher action over the crisis affecting its neighbour, which, until recently, was seen as an ally.
Amnesty accused the Turks of helping Syria to cover up crimes against its own people by stopping refugees from telling their stories to journalists and human rights groups. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
