UP to 30 people were killed in a suicide attack on a police headquarters in Iraq, when militants in police uniform detonated a car bomb then tried to storm the compound.
The car was also disguised as a police vehicle and the rush-hour explosion was followed by an assault from at least three gunmen armed with hand grenades and suicide vests.
They threw grenades as they burst through the gate of the compound in Kirkuk, but were all shot dead before they reached the headquarters building.
No organisation immediately claimed responsibility. Sunni militants including al-Qa'ida's front group in Iraq frequently attack the government and security forces. Brigadier General Natah Mohammed Sabr, the head of the city's emergency services, said that the attack had killed 30 and left 70 wounded. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
