The mother of journalist James Foley, missing since 2012, has released this statement after the video by the Islamic State militant group purporting to show the beheading of her son went online.

“We have never been prouder of our son Jim. He gave his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the Syrian people," she wrote in a Facebook post.

"We implore the kidnappers to spare the lives of the remaining hostages. Like Jim, they are innocents. They have no control over American government policy in Iraq, Syria or anywhere in the world."

"We thank Jim for all the joy he gave us. He was an extraordinary son, brother, journalist and person. Please respect our privacy in the days ahead as we mourn and cherish Jim."

The militant group has been accused of massacring hundreds of people in areas under their control in Iraq and also in eastern Syria.

The violence has displaced an estimated 1.2 million people in Iraq alone.
