Libya: Gaddafi and son buried at secret location in dawn ceremony
DEPOSED Libyan despot Muammar Gaddafi and his son Muatassim were buried at a secret location at dawn today.
A top aide was also interred in the same plot and just a handful of relatives and officials attended the ceremony, a Misrata military council official said.
In a text message read to The Associated Press, spokesman Ibrahim Beitalmal is quoted as saying the burial took place at 5am, and that Islamic prayers were read over the bodies.
The three bodies had been held in cold storage in Misrata since an injured Gaddafi was discovered hiding in a storm drain near his home town of Sirte on Thursday last.
The circumstances of his death in the hands of rebels remain uncertain.
Libya’s new leaders insist that he was killed in crossfire while others claim he was executed with a shot to the head.
The National Transitional Council has promised an investigation into the death.
Meanwhile the head of Libya's transitional government has tried to reassure Western powers which helped topple Muammar Gaddafi that the country's new leaders were moderate Muslims, after a speech that emphasised the Islamisation of Libya.
Mustafa Abdel Jalil, said the country will be a “moderate” Muslim nation, responding to concern the interim government wants to adopt a strict Islamic orientation.
