LÉ Samuel Beckett recovers five dead bodies while rescuing 118 migrants

IThe LÉ Samuel Becket has recovered five dead bodies while conducting a search and rescue operation off the coast of Tripoli.

Earlier today, following a request from the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre, the Irish Navy located and rescued a total of 118 migrants from a rubber vessel.

They also recovered the dead bodies of five migrants. The bodies are now onboard the LÉ Samuel Beckett.

The rescue operation began at 7.00am and all migrants were taken on board LÉ Samuel Beckett by 8.30am. The 118 migrants are now receiving food, water and medical treatment where required.

LÉ Samuel Beckett remains in the area.
