More than 1,000 prisoners have escaped from a prison near the eastern city of Benghazi.

In a massive jail break, officials said the situation erupted near the eastern city of Benghazi at Koyfiya prison as protesters stormed the offices of Islamist-allied parties in Libya's main cities.

It was not clear if the jail break was part of the protests or if the inmates had outside help, AP reported.

Benghazi's security situation is one of the most precarious in post-revolution Libya.
