AS the death toll from Pakistan's worst monsoon floods in recent times rose above 1,000, Concern's overseas director Paul O'Brien has warned it will get worse.
More than 27,000 people are believed to be trapped in the disaster that is affecting up to one million people.
Mr O'Brien said the flooding was the worst the Irish charity had experienced in Pakistan.
He added that Concern has focused on isolated rural communities, and the very poor, who do not have the resources to cope with the disaster. He appealed to the Irish public for financial assistance, which will be used for emergency food supplies, blankets and works to help provide water supplies.
"The destruction is massive and devastating," said a spokesman for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority of Pakistan.
The floods came after what meteorologists described as an "unprecedented" 30cm of rain fell in just 36 hours.
Experts believe the worst of the rainfall is over but the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
