Men only in Iran vote

Iranian women seeking to run in the presidential election next month have been told they are not allowed to take part.

The remark by Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, a member of Iran's constitutional watchdog group, effectively kills the largely symbolic bids by about 30 women seeking to run in the June 14 election.

Actress pregnant at 50

'Shameless' actress Tina Malone has announced she is pregnant at the age of 50.

Malone says she is four weeks pregnant after choosing to undergo IVF in Cyprus. She was considered too old to have NHS fertility treatment in the UK.

Strange requests

Silencing a noisy cockerel and supplying Olympic tickets were among the more unusual requests made to British consular staff abroad last year.

In Rome, a man asked Foreign Office staff to translate a phrase for a tattoo he wanted. And a woman requested that consular staff in Tel Aviv in Israel order her husband to get fit and eat healthily so that they could have children.

Blue rooms help sleep

People who sleep in a blue-decorated bedroom regularly get the best night's sleep, a study suggests. People sleeping in blue rooms get seven hours and 52 minutes' sleep per night, the survey of 2,000 British homes by Travelodge found.

Other bedroom colours that aided sleep were some shades of yellow, green, silver and orange.

Kangaroo attack

AN Australian politician taking his morning jog in Canberra came off second best after crossing a kangaroo.

Shane Rattenbury was seconds away from a collision as he pounded the pavement when he saw the kangaroo grazing on a front lawn. Mr Rattenbury said the 4ft 7in kangaroo knocked him to the ground, the claws of its powerful hind legs drawing blood . "I can say that the kangaroo is fine," he said.
