Mayor becomes a pirate on parade
New York City's mayor has lived up to his man of the people image by becoming a pirate among mermaids at a zany seaside parade.
Bill de Blasio turned up dressed to repel boarders at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade wearing a puffy pirate shirt and brandishing a fake sword. Organisers said he was the first mayor to come in costume.
The fun was a family affair with Mr de Blasio's wife Chirlane McCray and their daughter Chiara choosing blue and gold mermaid dresses and s on Dante bare-chested and painted blue.
Dante and Chiara were chosen King Neptune and Queen Mermaid of the parade and the teenagers were wheeled in a 1923 wicker rolling chair along the parade route.
The event draws hundreds of thousands of revellers to the beach each year. Many wear revealing, mermaid-themed costumes.
