A man accused of shooting a New York City policeman in the head has been arraigned on charges including two counts of attempted murder of a police officer.

Demetrius Blackwell appeared in court in a torn jumpsuit with his hands cuffed behind his back and his legs shackled. He did not enter a plea and is due back in court on May 8.

Blackwell was arrested last night over the shooting of Brian Moore. He remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Officials said Mr Moore was shot on a Queens street after he and his partner pulled up to a man adjusting his waistband in a suspicious manner.

Prosecutors say Blackwell was ordered to stop but turned suddenly and fired at least twice. The 35-year-old is being held without bail.
