A person is in police custody after reports of a shooting at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana.
University authorities alerted the public, and some students, via their Twitter page, and urged anyone on campus to seek shelter.
After more than an hour of sweeping the building at the centre of the shooting, students are being permitted to return to certain parts of the campus.
"The EE building remains closed by police, other campus buildings are now open and the shelter in place order has been lifted," a spokeswoman told Fox News.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man with his hands behind his back with police, but police would only confirm an individual was arrested.
Details of the shooting are still unclear, however several have said they heard two gunshots.
Students locked themselves inside rooms and hid under chairs for safety and the safety order has now been lifted.
