A Mafia gang in Sicily discussed assassinating Italy's interior minister because they blamed him for exceptionally tough prison conditions, according to Palermo's chief prosecutor.

Francesco Lo Voi told reporters that six suspected mobsters had been arrested over an alleged plot hatched in the Cosa Nostra's Corleone stronghold to kill Angelino Alfano.

Mr Lo Voi said the suspects, overheard in intercepted phone conversations, discussed the "possibility of carrying out an attack" against Mr Alfano.

The prosecutor added that the suspects indicated they were mulling an attack in the event that Mr Alfano's security protection was removed.

The prosecutor said there was no likelihood that would happen.
