Nearly 200 firefighters, assisted by water-dropping aircraft, fire engines and volunteers, are fighting a large forest fire that has raged through the Greek island of Evia for three days.

No injuries have been reported but a village, a monastery and a small hotel have been evacuated, while the blaze threatened the small seaside town of Limni overnight on Monday.

The hotel was destroyed along with a holiday home, a restaurant and a few outhouses.

A ferry boat remains on standby, together with dozens of pleasure craft and fishing boats, to evacuate Limni if necessary, but a change in the direction of the wind turned the flames away.

Five planes and five helicopters are taking part in the efforts. The cause of the fire is still unclear.
