At least 23 people have died in a bus crash in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

A crowded bus has veered off a rocky village road and fallen into a deep gorge, killing at least 23 people in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir.

The driver apparently lost control of the bus while negotiating a curve, police inspector general Danish Rana said. At least 25 other people were injured in the accident.

Mr Rana said police had reached the area and were evacuating the injured.

The 48-seat public bus was travelling to the town of Uthampur when the accident happened near the village of Marotthi, more than 120 miles south of Indian-controlled Kashmir's main city of Srinagar.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, but claimed by both in its entirety.
