Irish citizens warned to leave troubled country immediately
The Department of Foreign Affairs has warned Irish people "not to travel to Libya under any circumstances" and for those citizens who are already there to "leave immediately".
"Travel within the country is extremely dangerous. In Benghazi and Derna, there have also been a number of foreign nationals shot dead," the advisory read.
A crisis team has been set up to assist around 100 Irish citizens caught up in the escalating violence.
Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan yesterday announced that the team had been established to help those Irish citizens who wish to remain in the country as well as those trying to flee.
"The security situation in Libya has deteriorated significantly," he said, urging any Irish citizen living or travelling in Libya to register with them.
