Inquest finds Moat death was suicide

A jury at the inquest of cornered killer Raoul Moat, who blasted himself in the head with a sawn-off shotgun, has returned a unanimous verdict of suicide.

Police fired Tasers as he prepared to kill himself in Rothbury, Northumberland, in July last year, but the round had no effect on him, the inquest at Newcastle Crown Court heard.

Miner trapped by fallen roof dies

A miner trapped in a colliery by a fallen roof has died. The miner died after being trapped in the Kellingley Colliery, near Knottingley, West Yorks, UK Coal confirmed last night. Another miner who was trapped by his leg was rescued and treated.

Gareth Williams, managing director for coal mining for UK Coal said: "Colleagues successfully recovered one of the two employees. UK Coal regrets to confirm the second colleague was confirmed dead."

Hudson opens weight loss centre

Singer and actress Jennifer Hudson hopes to show her commitment to a healthier lifestyle with her new weight loss centre in Chicago.

The Chicago native opened the Jennifer Hudson Weight Watchers Centre yesterday. Hudson has lost 80 pounds and is a Weight Watchers spokeswoman.

30pc of drivers text at the wheel

Nearly 30pc of drivers send text messages while at the wheel, according to a UK survey.

And 8pc text and drive at least once a week, the poll of 841 drivers by road safety charity Brake and insurance company Direct Line found.

Court told MP's wife a cat burglar

A Birmingham Liberal Democrat MP's wife was caught on CCTV as she sneaked into the home of her husband's mistress to steal a kitten, a jury has heard.

A Birmingham court was told that Christine Hemming, Birmingham Yardley MP John Hemming and his lover, Emily Cox, were involved in a "love triangle" at the time of the alleged offence. Mrs Hemming entered a not guilty plea in February.

Love on the wire for US couple

A US couple cut down copper wire from 18 pylons to pay for their wedding.

April Cater and Joseph Russell took the wire to sell for scrap four days before their wedding in Pennsylvania. Mr Russell told police he had lost his job and needed the money.
