Indian police say they may consider sedition charges against dozens of Kashmiri students who cheered for the Pakistan cricket team during a match against India.
Officials are trying to track down the 66 university students for questioning, said police officer N.K.S. Chauhan today in Lucknow. The students were expelled from their college in Uttar Pradesh state and kicked out of their dorms following the televised cricket match on Sunday.
Sedition carries a possible life sentence.
India is a cricket-crazy nation, but some Kashmiris refuse to support the Indian team because of deep resentment over Indian rule in the territory. Insurgent groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence or its merger with Pakistan since 1989.
India lost the match to Pakistan.
