In Brief: 'Unfriend' named word of the year

UNFRIEND is the 'New Oxford American Dictionary's' 2009 Word of the Year. It means to remove someone as a friend on a social networking Web site such as Facebook.

Finalists also included netbook, which is a small laptop, and sexting, which is sending sexually explicit texts by mobile phone.

Ceramic implant for officer's skull

A police officer has become the first person in Britain to have part of her skull replaced with a ceramic implant that will heal itself if it fractures.

Linda Butt (45) from Southampton, had the pioneering operation because she was diagnosed with five brain tumours and surgeons cut away a large part of her skull to get to them.

Suchet to play Poirot a 65th time

AFTER 21 years playing super-sleuth Hercule Poirot, David Suchet returns with one of Agatha Christie's best-known works.

Filming began this week for the television adaptation of 'Murder On The Orient Express' and it will be the 65th time Suchet has sported the Belgian's famous upturned moustache.

Pair are fined for tossing pigeons

TWO British men have each been fined by 600 zlotys (€146) by a court in Poland for pigeon tossing. The pair, both aged 24, threw the birds up in to the air in historic Krakow's Renaissance market.

The stunned birds fell to the ground, breaking their wings.

Turkey-cam offers food for thought

A FOOD firm has launched an internet turkey webcam so diners can watch the bird destined to be their Christmas dinner.

Park, Farm & Wild, which sells produce from farms in north Norfolk, shows footage of Norfolk Black and Norfolk Bronze turkeys on its website.

Serbian president faces alcohol fine

SERBIA'S president Boris Tadic faces a fine for allegedly drinking champagne at a stadium with his sports minister and the head of the football federation.

Drinking alcohol at sports venues is illegal in Serbia. Mr Tadic has said he only made a toast and did not drink.
