In Brief: Rights group plea for Saudi 'witch'

Saudi Arabia should overturn a death sentence imposed on a Lebanese national convicted of practising witchcraft, Human Rights Watch said in a report yesterday.

Ali Sibat, a Lebanese psychic who made predictions on a satellite TV channel from his home in Beirut, was arrested by religious police in the holy city of Medina during a pilgrimage.

Hammond's ski trip hits the skids

Injury-prone 'Top Gear' host Richard Hammond, who survived a horrific dragster smash three years ago, has revealed he is struggling to get insurance for a skiing holiday after twisting his ankle.

Hammond said yesterday: "It is always a tremendous moment -- say the name Richard Hammond, long pause, 'any accidents in the last ...?'"

AN Italian-American organisation says an MTV reality show 'Jersey Shore' is offensive to Italian-Americans and should be scrapped.

UNICO National says the show relies on crude stereotypes but MTV claims the Italian-American cast "takes pride in their ethnicity".

Forgive me, Lord, for I have stolen

A THIEF looted a US church of expensive electronic equipment -- and left an apology.

A note scrawled on the wall of Berean Baptist Church in Ellenwood, Georgia, said: "Sorry, but I'm poor. Forgive me Lord."

Athens burns as politicians vote

The historic vote paves the way for Greece's European partners and the International Monetary Fund to release 170 billion euro in new rescue loans, without which Greece would default on its mountain of debt next month and likely leave the eurozone - a scenario that would further unsettle global markets. Politicians voted 199-74 in favour of the cutbacks, despite strong dissent among the two main coalition members.

Eight held in corruption probe

Five men aged between 45 and 68 were arrested at addresses in London, Kent and Essex on suspicion of corruption, aiding and abetting misconduct in a public office, and conspiracy in relation to both these offences. They are being questioned at police stations in London and Kent.
