In brief: Jail for mum who left baby on road

A RUSSIAN court has sentenced a young mother, Elena Osina (24), and her brother to eight years in prison after they admitted putting the woman's nine-month-old son on a four-lane highway in the hope he would be killed.

A passing motorist rescued the child unharmed after about 10 minutes, and the boy has since been adopted by another family.

Tin of spaghetti proves fiery dish

A FIRE which damaged a maisonette broke out after a toaster was used to heat a tin of spaghetti.

Two men escaped from the incident in Upper Holloway, north London, after the tin is thought to have heated up, igniting the property. Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters attended the blaze, which did not cause injury.

Alligator bites off teenager's arm

AN alligator at least 10ft long lunged at a teenager swimming in a river and bit off his right arm below the elbow, Florida state wildlife officials said.

Kaleb Langdale (17) survived the encounter in the Caloosahatchee River. Wildlife officers who caught and killed the alligator retrieved the arm, but doctors were unable to reattach it.

Burglar caught in blind spot

A WOULD-BE burglar was halted by unlikely obstacles -- window blinds -- police in New Mexico said.

Police found Thomas Molina (38) tangled in some window blinds at Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque after they were called about a break-in.

Thieves pull off hair-raising crime

THREE thieves battered through a wall, crawled close to the floor to dodge motion detectors and stole six duffel bags filled with human hair extensions from a Chicago beauty supply store.

Store owner Don Shin said the criminals took his best merchandise. The 'Chicago Tribune' reported that the hair extensions were worth $230,000 (€187,757).

It's an underdog's life, says author

BESTSELLING author Malcolm Gladwell is writing a book called 'David and Goliath' that is being billed as an exploration of what happens when underdogs confront the powerful. Little, Brown will publish the book in 2013.

Gladwell (48) is a 'New York Times' bestselling author whose books include 'The Tipping Point.'
