In Brief: Cancer kills Nat King Cole daughter

The sister of US singer Natalie Cole, actress Carol Cole, has died aged 64.

She died of lung cancer on the day Natalie received a kidney transplant. The sisters were daughters of the legendary Nat King Cole, who also died of lung cancer.

Nut firm ignored salmonella alert

Food safety inspectors said a California plant at the centre of a salmonella scare knew some of its pistachios were tainted but continued shipping nuts for six months.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a sweeping national warning in March for consumers to avoid eating pistachios after health concerns surfaced about nuts from supplied by Setton Pistachio.

Venezuela seeks $4.3bn bank loan

The Venezuelan government is in talks with Brazil's national development bank for loans that could reach $4.3bn.

United colours of Brazilian fashion

Brazilian organisers of Sao Paulo Fashion Week promised to take steps to try to make sure that at least 10pc of the models walking the runways will be black or native Indians.

State prosecutors struck a deal with the event's organisers who will attempt to convince designers to promote racial inclusion.

Guyana's first drink-drive laws

The South American country of Guyana has approved its first law to curb drinking and driving.

Anyone found with a blood alcohol content of over 0.08pc will face arrest, fines and a possible one-year suspension of their licence.

Locals get shirty over topless girl

Prosecutors in the US state of Maine will review a complaint that a waitress from a Maine topless doughnut shop was outside the business without wearing a shirt.

A state trooper was sent to the Grand View Topless Coffee shop at the weekend to investigate after someone called in a complaint. Police say no one was charged, but the matter has been turned over to the district attorney for review.

Man shot in pub in Manchester

The victim, named by sources as 23-year-old Mark Short, was gunned down in the Cotton Tree pub in Market Street, Droylsden, Greater Manchester shortly before 11.50pm yesterday.Three other men, believed to be related to Mr Short, were also injured and are being treated in hospital.

Giant royal family on Southbank

The largest ever photograph of the Royal Family has been displayed on a prominent South Bank building in celebration of the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee.Sea Containers, by Blackfriars Bridge, was enrobed in the giant picture measuring 100m by 70m and weighing in at nearly two tons. The image was erected by a team of eight people over 45 hours. It is due to remain in place until July.

Oldest woman defeats Everest again

Watanabe reached the summit from the Tibetan side on 19 May, at the age of 73 years and 180 days. That day, more than 200 climbers were aiming for the summit on the busier southern route in Nepal. Four died, apparently from altitude sickness and exhaustion, on one of the deadliest days on the mountain.
