An Italian TV chef has caused outrage by describing veganism as a ‘sect’ and stating ‘I would kill them all.’

High-profile chef, Gianfranco Vissani, made the comments on the La7 network.

He said: “Vegans? They’re like the members of a sect. They’re like Jehovah’s Witnesses. I’d kill them all.”

He was urged by his co-chef to "stop saying stupid things."

Although the comments were made as a joke, the response on social media was largely negative with many commenting on the lack of taste from such a renowned chef.

This is not the first time celebrity cooks clashed with vegans, with American chef Anthony Bourdain once writing: “Vegans are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn. To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living.”
