Historian John Provan, a long-time friend, said that Mr Franz died on August 13 in Frankfurt.

German news agency dpa quoted his widow, Annerose Franz, saying he died of heart failure aged 92.

Mr Franz was a cabin boy on the Hindenburg, making three journeys to South America and one to North America before the disaster.

Mr Provan said Mr Franz survived "without a scratch on him" thanks to luck and quick thinking.

The hydrogen-filled airship caught fire and crashed in Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 35 of the 97 people on board and a Navy crewman on the ground on May 6 1937.
