Heartwarming scenes as police stop to make dinner for 'lonely' elderly couple
Italian police officers proved they were more than an arm of law and order last week when they cooked pasta for an elderly couple in their home.
Police were called following reports of crying and shouting at an apartment in the Appio area of Rome on Tuesday.
The husband and wife, Michele (94) and Jole (84) had become upset watching the news and local police said they were lonely and had not been visited often.
Police posted an account of the night to their Facebook page, saying the couple’s neighbours were also away at the time.
The police wrote: “There isn't a crime. Jole and Michele are not victims of scams as often happens to the elderly and no burglar came in the house. There's no one to save.”
While waiting for an ambulance to arrive to check the Michele and Jole over, the police said the officers understood “just a little bit of warmth will bring peace to Jole and Michele”.
The police then asked to use the pantry and improvised a dinner of pasta with butter and cheese for the pair.
“Nothing special. But with a precious ingredient: inside, all their humanity,” the police added.
Police officer Andrea cooked the meal while Alessandro, Ernesto and Mirko kept the Michele and Jole entertained.
