Twenty-two terror suspects have escaped from a jail in northern Baghdad after killing a security guard, Iraqi officials said.
Two senior security officials said a manhunt for the prisoners resulted in the death of one and the arrests of 13 others. Eight are still at large.
The officials said the detainees killed the guard and escaped by a back door at the detention centre in the capital's al-Adela prison early today.
Another guard said several guards were subsequently detained and are being questioned as possible accomplices.
Jailbreaks are frequent in Iraq and, as with other security breaches, have cast doubts on the ability of the authorities to secure the country, which is mired in sectarian tensions.
