FORMER footballer Paul Gascoigne is recovering after leaving intensive care in Arizona. He had been taken ill during detox treatment for alcoholism.
His former captain at Tottenham, Gary Mabbutt, said Gascoigne (45) was taken to hospital after a bad reaction to the detox regime. Gary Lineker, another Tottenham teammate, said: "Gazza is struggling. Let's hope he can hang on in there."
Kashmir on lockdown
Most of Indian Kashmir is paralysed as a strict curfew remains in effect after the execution of a Kashmiri man convicted in a deadly 2001 attack on India's parliament .
Mohammed Afzal Guru was hanged in New Delhi early on Saturday, triggering protests across Indian Kashmir and prompting authorities to enforce a general curfew. Police say 23 policemen and 13 protesters were injured in Saturday's demonstrations.
Mardi Gras shootings
Four people were shot on a packed Bourbon Street in New Orleans, sending people running amid the countdown to Mardi Gras, police said. But the party resumed soon, as crowds thronged the famous French Quarter street following the shooting.
Two males and two females were wounded just before 9.30pm yesterday local time, a police spokesman said. He said one male was in critical condition and had undergone surgery, while the other three were in stable condition.
Brown in car accident
Police in Beverly Hills say Chris Brown escaped injury after crashing his Porsche into a wall while being chased by paparazzi.
Police said they would investigate the incident. They didn't know whether the paparazzi in the pursuing vehicles have been identified. The crash came a day before the Grammy Awards, where Brown is up for best urban contemporary album.
Largest croc croaks
The world's largest saltwater crocodile in captivity has died in the Philippines, leaving villagers in tears in a backwater town that shot to prominence because of the immense reptile.
Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde of Bunawan town plans to have the 20-foot crocodile preserved so villagers can still see the reptile that put their little-known town on the map.
