Games hit by more snags on first day

After the optimism of the opening ceremony, the Delhi Commonwealth Games were once again hit by a series of problems on the opening day of competition:

  • Scales: The weigh-in for the boxing competition had to be abandoned when the scales were found to be faulty.
  • Crowds: Crowds were virtually non-existent at many of the opening day's events with only 100 spectators watching the hockey action between Wales and New Zealand.
  • Ceilings: The start of the men's 4x100m freestyle final was delayed while volunteers fished flakes of ceiling plaster out of the pool.
