Frenchman plans epic swim across the Pacific
A Frenchman is planning to become the first person to swim across the Pacific Ocean from Tokyo to San Francisco in an epic five-month journey.
Benoit Lecomte (44) will start the 8,850km swim across the Pacific from Japan next year.
It is a second major sea adventure for Mr Lecomte, who became the first man to swim across the Atlantic without flotation devices in a 73-day journey in 1998. He will depart from Choshi on the eastern coast of Japan next spring.
Mr Lecomte, who is based in the United States, aims to swim for up to eight hours a day before resting overnight on a trailing catamaran. He will be supported by a five-man crew.
He was motivated to start his epic swims when his father died from colon cancer in 1991. This swim will raise money for research into cancer. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
