Nine people died after fire engulfed three carriages of an Indian passenger train as it travelled from Mumbai to the Himalayan town of Dehradun.

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted Western Railway official Sharat Chandra as saying nine people died in the blaze.

The authorities are trying to discover what caused the fire to break out before dawn today as most passengers were sleeping.

Mr Chandra says officials are working to identify those killed. Police say another four people were injured.

The train was stopped in the town of Gholvad in Maharashtra state where firefighters put out the flames.
