Fire in homeless hostel kills 21

Fire ripped through a homeless hostel in Poland yesterday killing at least 21 people and injuring 20 more. The blaze broke out around 1am in Kamien Pomorski, near the Baltic Sea coast.

There were 77 people registered as residents in the building at the time of the blaze. Firefighters said not all were yet accounted for and that the death toll could rise.

Sex trade suspect had bag of lingerie

A Brazilian woman suspected of being involved in the sex industry was refused entry to the UK after border officials discovered only three T-shirts, a dressing gown and a large quantity of lingerie in her luggage.

Suspicions were raised when the woman (32) told UK Border Agency officers at Newcastle Airport that the purpose of her visit was to "see Newcastle city centre".

Pair executed in public by Taliban

Taliban militants publicly executed a man and girl yesterday for eloping when she was already engaged to marry someone else.

Hashim Noorzai, head of the Khash Rud district in southwestern Nimruz province, said the two were executed by gunshots in front of a crowd of villagers.

US envoy fired on by Somali rebels

Somali insurgents fired mortars toward US congressman Donald Payne as he left Somalia yesterday after a rare visit by a US politician to the anarchic Horn of Africa nation, police said.

Somalia's capital Mogadishu is one of the world's most dangerous places. Somali Internal Security Minister Omar Hashi Aden said Payne's plane was airborne when the mortars fell.

Tennis star Roger Federer marries

TENNIS star Roger Federer married his long-term girlfriend in an intimate ceremony in his home town of Basel over the Easter weekend.

The 13-times Grand Slam winner revealed that he had wed Mirka Vavrinec on his official website. The move comes a month after the couple announced they are expecting their first child.

Tourists see man's fatal fall from cliff

Tourists watched a man fall 300 feet to his death after he posed for a photograph holding on to a cliff by a tuft of grass, coastguards said.

The 39-year-old Polish man tumbled down the sheer cliff face, landing at the bottom in bushes at Seaton in Devon at about 3pm yesterday.
