Far-right wins in France and Germany 'could destroy Europe'

Mr Rajoy warned of grave consequences for Europe if far-right parties triumph in France and Germany

Spain's prime minister has said election victories for far-right parties in France and Germany's forthcoming elections would be a catastrophe for Europe.

Mariano Rajoy told Onda Cero radio that wins for Marine le Pen's National Front in France in the spring and another for the nationalist Alternative for Germany, or AfD, in Germany in September would lead "simply to the destruction of Europe".

Mr Rajoy, a conservative, accused both parties of cheap demagogy, which, he said, only served to generate poverty and division.

The Spanish leader hopes Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union wins in Germany and either the Republican or Socialist parties in France, saying it is important for Europe that both elections go well.
