Divers recovered the body of the man from the main harbour in the city of Split this morning after an all night search.

He has been named locally as Eamon Buckley, from Moycullen in Co Galway.

It is understood that the young man had travelled to Split to attend a music festival with a large group of friends.

It is understood that local police are treating the young man’s death as an accident following unconfirmed reports that he fell into the sea and drowned.

The Port Authority in Split confirmed that police began a search for the Irish national at around 3am on Tuesday morning. A post-mortem is to be carried out later today, police said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was working with the Irish embassy in Zagreb to provide consular assistance to the man’s family.
