The Duke of Cambridge dropped a broad hint yesterday that Prince George may soon have a brother or sister.

William was chatting to Cynthia Read, who had made a wool shawl for the young prince, when he told her: "You might have to make another one soon!"

William and Kate have made no secret of their desire to have two children.

While there is no suggestion that Kate is pregnant, her husband's comment will lead to speculation that they are planning an addition to their family soon. The royal couple were meeting dignitaries in Cambridge, New Zealand.

Last March, William said that he and his wife were not planning another baby yet, when he said: "Maybe one day – one's enough at the moment.''
