Britain's unofficial royal family, the Beckhams, were also represented by David and his son Romeo.

Famous faces from the world of sport traditionally take centre stage on Centre Court, and the Royal Box was packed with stars from the worlds of rugby, cricket, golf, football, boxing and, of course, tennis, to watch Roger Federer, Petra Kivitova and Andy Murray, among others, chase their Wimbledon dreams. Switzerland's Roger Federer kept his dream of a record eighth Wimbledon title alive, by beating Frenchman Gilles Simon.

That was the first in a Switzerland against France double feature on Court 1, before Stan Wawrinka lost out to Richard Gasquet.

It wasn't all smooth running however, as spectators leaving late in the day yesterday faced transport difficulties as London Underground workers went on strike.
