War dead honoured as world marks end of fighting
MILLIONS of people around the world paid silent tributes yesterday on the anniversary of Armistice Day.
This was the day when peace returned to Europe at the end of World War One at the "11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" of 1918.
In France, President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla (pictured) revived the eternal flame on the tomb of the unknown soldier, beneath the Arc de Triomphe in the French capital.
Some 3,000 people turned out to watch the ceremony.
