Man admits he was “showing off” in video featuring animal abuse.
A 27-year-old Southampton man has been banned from keeping animals for ten years.
The ban came after video emerged of Mathew Coffin dangling his one-year-old cat Daisy by her tail and bouncing her up and down like a yo-yo.
The footage came to light when friends who had witnessed previous abuse of the cat decided to film it, and hand the evidence into the RSPCA.
Coffin initially claimed that he was preparing the cat for a visit by his naughty nephew who “had a tendency to pull cats tails.”
He later admitted to a Magistrates' court that this was untrue and that he had been showing off. The RSPCA welcomed the sentence and said that it shows how seriously mistreatment offences are being viewed.
They also stated that if Daisy had been older and heavier, this abuse would have caused serious damage to her spine. Coffin was fined £150 (€180) and ordered to pay just over £250 (€300) of costs.
The sentence shows how seriously video evidence of animal abuse crimes is being taken and that those who perpetrate this form of abuse will be prosecuted.
