Video: Nicolas Sarkozy penned into bar after being heckled on campaign trail
RIOT police had to break up a crowd of dozens of left-wing supporters, and some Basque separatists, after French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrvied to campaign in Bayonne ahead of April's presidential race.
The protesters heckled Mr Sarkozy, threw balled up political tracts at him and briefly fenced him in as he visited the Basque city. Some threw eggs at the windows of a bar where he was meeting supporters.
The president said a small group of "louts" would not stop him from from meeting French people, and derided supporters of his main opponent Socialist Francois Hollande for associating with the separatists.
"We are in France and the French president will go wherever he wants in the French Republic. And if that doesn't please a minority of louts, then they will just have to put up with it," Mr Sarkozy said.
