Tragic Malaysia Airlines MH17 may have been ‘shot down by mistake’ by ill-trained pro-Russian rebels, US intelligence officials announced tonight.

Intelligence officials also dismissed Russia’s accounts of the incident.

US said the evidence they have gathered so far suggests that it was separatists that launched a surface-to-air missile at the tragic Malaysia Airlines flight and the next step is to find out ‘who pulled the trigger’.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest informed people about tonight's announcement.

Mr Earnest said the US welcomes the news that most of the remains of the 298 killed have been handed over to authorities and the black boxes were transferred to Dutch and Malaysian authorities.

But he says the US still has not seen the level of cooperation from Russia and pro-Russian separatists that it wants to see.

Mr Earnest says international investigators led by the Dutch still need full and immediate access to the crash site.
