Two teenagers die in fall into canal

Two teenagers have died after falling into a canal. The 17-year-old girl and 18-year-old man were pulled from the water in Smethwick, West Midlands, by emergency services but died later in hospital.

Paramedics, fire crews and police were called to the scene, near Brasshouse Road, shortly before 7.30pm yesterday.



A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews joined firefighters and police to locate two persons who had reportedly fallen into the canal in Smethwick.



"A man and woman were recovered from the water and crews worked as a team to deliver advanced life support at the scene.



"The patients were taken to hospital, but they were pronounced dead a short time later."



A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: "Police are trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and we are investigating the sequence of events which led up to the deaths. However, at this stage it is looking like a tragic accident.



"Officers have notified both families and are supporting them at this time."
