Texas would welcome gun lovers from New York after plans were approved to introduce restrictive gun laws in the Empire State, a senior official has said.

Last week Andrew Cuomo, the New York governor, approved new measures which saw a ban on assault weapons extended and reduced the size of permissible gun magazines.

But now the Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has seized on the tougher laws to try and persuade people to move to the Lone Star State. He has run adverts on New York media websites asking New York gun owners to consider moving to Texas.

Clicking on the advert, which is designed like a traditional western 'Wanted' poster, takes people to a letter from Mr Abbott. The letter points out that Texas has no income tax meaning "you'll also get to keep more of what you earn and use some of that extra money to buy more ammo".

Asked about the adverts, Mr Abbott said: "Texas is better than New York, and New York just gave us another excuse to say that."
