Soccer legend 'imprisoned' by family in bid to stop marriage
The 36-year-old fiancee of the former football star Alfredo Di Stefano claims that the octogenarian is being kept "a prisoner" by his family in an attempt to stop their marriage.
Gina Gonzalez, who met the ex-Real Madrid player when hired to help write his autobiography three years ago, has issued an appeal to friends and football authorities to intervene.
The five children of 86-year-old Di Stefano applied for legal guardianship of their father last month to put a halt to wedding.
"Alfredo Di Stefano has lost his freedom," said his Costa Rican fiancee in a statement read to reporters in Madrid. "I have absolutely credible information that in recent days Alfredo has picked up the telephone in his home and contacted certain people and that at that moment the call has been cut off, because they have taken the telephone from him to stop him talking.
"It is clear that his freedom is being snatched away from him."
The Argentine-born striker, who scored 216 goals for Real Madrid between 1953 and 1964, announced his plans to marry last month despite opposition from his children worried over the fate of his estate.
"I don't care what my children think. I'm in love and I'm getting married to Gina as soon as possible," he told Spain's 'El Mundo' newspaper. Miss Gonzalez called on his friends, football authorities and even the Argentine government to step in and help.
